Welcome to my site. My name is Guillaume Vogels, I work on paintings, watercolours, photography, sculptures and installations. My paintings and watercolours are my main works of art and I primarily work on two types of paintings: abstract and landscape paintings.

In my abstract paintings , I try to find a layered image that combines subtile colour changes, light and atmospheric effects. The layered images in my paintings remind me of some sort of patina and refer to all the work and time that has been put into the image, as if the work of art has existed for a very long time and has been touched by the wear and tear over the years. Like an old door in a building of which the paint has been peeled away, revealing old coats of paint and the wood, becoming a window into history. At the same time, skies inspire me while I work. Clouds, mist, light, shade and transparency are weather elements that give input for my works.

My landscape paintings display sombre and gloomy landscapes with which I try to evoke a reference to fields of war, destruction, atrocities committed by mankind. These paintings are also very layered, but the paint is put on thickly, and often combined with other materials, such as wood, rock, steel wire.

Below: World War I project

This project was inspired by my great-grandfather, Maurice Cizeau, who fought in the war from 1915 to April 1917, when he lost his leg during a shelling. He recovered and lived a good life until he died in 1968. Because he received a medal and was inducted into the Légion d'Honneur, I was able to retrieve information about his whereabouts before he was injured. He took part in the offensive at Chemin des Dames and was wounded near Cormicy (10 km north of Reims) the day after a big attack. My great-grandfather was enlisted in the 44th Regiment of Infantry and was in active combat for 13 months.

My project mainly consists of paintings that display disturbed landscapes or imagined detailed views of the soil seen from above.

In 2000 I graduated from Academie voor Beeldende Vorming in Tilburg. My graduation project consisted of a short film and a number of photographs I took in the neighbourhood where I lived, 'het Nieuwe Westen' in Rotterdam. For one year I worked on the project, gradually getting to know the people I regularly met on the streets. To also have the chance to photograph people at home, I put invitations in letterboxes, visited the mosque, talked to people and asked them to participate in the project by having their picture taken by me. I used an old large format view camera, which forced me to take my time and thus create photos which had a very different atmosphere from documentary photos. In the end I think this project was my way of portraying or mapping my neighbourhood.
